De Europese Unie is Europa niet. Het is een Economische Unie, een bureaucratie verdwaald in haar kapitalistische waarden, alwaar de Europese ziel uit verdwenen is en tal van spoken uit een destructief verleden weer binnentreden. Europa daarentegen, is de nu alom vergeten prinses, ontvoerd door Zeus vermomd als stier, als drenkeling aangespoeld op Kreta waar zij de trotse moeder werd die aan de wieg stond van een groots, humanistisch beschavingsideaal, bedacht en bezongen door denkers en dichters, verwezenlijkt door dappere daadkrachtigen, die een wereld van waarheid en rechtvaardigheid bevochten op de tirannie van macht, rijkdom en domheid. In De Adriatische Zee gaat Kaplan op zoek naar antwoorden op vragen over de toekomst van Europa en verdiept hij zich in de vluchtelingencrisis, de strijd om fossiele brandstoffen en de terugkeer van de regio als internationaal handelscentrum. De Dertigjarige Oorlog, die 400 jaar geleden begon, wordt meestal beschreven vanuit een nationaal standpunt. Maar het was in feite de allereerste wereldoorlog, die bijna 12 miljoen slachtoffers maakte. Wat begon als een godsdienstoorlog in een uithoek van Europa mondde uit in een allesverwoestende strijd om de macht. Voor de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden was de strijd de voortzetting van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog. Net als andere protestantse staten sloot ze zich aan bij het katholieke Frankrijk. De invasies uit het noorden en zuiden leidden tot het economische verval van Vlaanderen. Dit is het eerste Nederlandstalige boek over dit thema vanuit Europees perspectief. Dick Harrison heeft in dit boek aandacht voor de huurling, de priester, de non, de schoenmaker, de burgemeester en andere gewone mensen. Daarnaast laat hij zien dat de Dertigjarige Oorlog een pan-Europese oorlog was, en heeft hij oog voor de gevechten in Afrika en Amerika.

This book provides a historical-sociological analysis of the history of sociology in Belgium from the late-nineteenth until the early-twenty-first century. It sheds new light on the social structures that shaped and shape the orientations and work of sociologists in Belgium. The impact of three structural factors is discussed in more detail: religion, language and publication imperatives. Starting from analyses of these structural factors, this book presents a detailed analysis of the genesis and institutionalization of different sociologies in Belgium. It sheds light on the kinds of sociological knowledge that are or are not valued in Belgium.
